Poetry

Male Friend

by Rongrong Yu

Before America, sex was nowhere
and everywhere. How being a girl
meant long socks and skirts,
walking poised in my rough skin.
Every boy was potential husband,
potential threat. Fear smeared hot red
and I curled, shy shrimp; moved to Pluto
to acclimate.

Then you appeared, slightly chubby,
mysterious, slacks and long sleeved shirts,
hair combed, not a single curse word.
Your philosophy, my philosophy, how
our families both have two fridges.
How polite you are, how normal,
how specially normal to me, my friend.

A recent graduate of Rice University, Rongrong Yu has previously been published in Poetry Magazine, InnerVisions, and will be published in an upcoming issue of Poet's Canvas. She is a programmer by day.
